Mac Mini running extremely slow

I upgraded to Yosemite. Mac Mini (late 2012) did fine for a while. Lately has been acting worse and worse. It will run slow on some things, and do fine on others. No real pattern. Did a clean re-install. Not much difference after a day or two. By slow I mean 1-2 minutes for apps to open, 5-15 seconds for clicks to register.

I have checked online and in forums and already repaired permissions (done today) and reset the SMC by unplugging it from the wall and rebooting, per the KB article.

Just ran ETRECHECK and the forum wouldn't let me post the info. Only weirdness I saw was 15 instances of Google Chrome Helper. I don't know why so many GOOGLE CHROME HELPERS, but I normally have 8-10 tabs open as a time.

Thanks for your help. I am mostly a WINDOWS user but have to "dabble" in the MAC world about 15% of the time. (Just so you know I'm not an OS X Geek <grin>)

Again, THANKS!

Buddy

It said that I wasn't authorized to post that material.

Here are the results of the ETRECHEK. Maybe this will work...

I already uninstalled the AVIRA to see if that will help, since there were failures to load.

THANKS!

Problem description:

Mac Mini 2012 running extremely slow. Takes MINUTES for some apps (esp MS OFFICE 2016) to load. Click on something and it takes as much as 10 seconds to get a response. Some apps seem to start running right, but it is SLOW. I’ve repaired permissions and I have reset the SMC by unplugging, waiting 30 seconds, and re-plugging & rebooting the system.

- Remove the avira security software following the developer's instructions. it is not needed and frequently causes problems

- Periodically complete close and reopen Chrome or better yet use another browser. Otherwise it uses a lot of CP and memory

More memory will help. Your Mac can accept 18 GB (2x8 GB). If y can't go for 16 GB I would replace one 2 GB stick with a 8 GB stick. Very easy to do. See:

http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/mac_mini2012/

Replacing the HD with an SSD wil also help but is more difficult. The above link covers that.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
