Earbuds causing iPhone 5 to have psychotic break

Is anyone aware of a fix for this issue? When my Apple earbuds are plugged into my iPhone 5, it randomly drops calls (repeatedly in short time span), iTunes randomly turns on and off, and Siri spontaneously activates. Same thing happens when I plug my earbuds into my husband's iPhone 6. Thank you for any help!
