Q: I don't understand workflow with Apple Photos

Would like to import photos from my camera, create either an event or album, edit the photos, and have them sync to my iPad and Apple TV.  I would also like to share the event or album on Flickr.  This worked great with the old iPhoto app.  I can't seem to replicate this simple workflow with the new Photos app.  Why am I missing? Do I need to store my entire library in iCloud?

      Why am I missing??

Photos does not have events like iPhoto had.  A Photos library is subdivided into moments of related photos.  And these moments are created automatically based on the capture date and the locations of the photos.  We cannot influence which photos will be part of a moment.

What we can do however, is to select the photos in the Last I port album to create our own albums of the photos that we want to be together in an album.  Pressing the key combination  ⌘N will create an album with the currently selected photos.

How do edits I do on my mac sync to other devices once you've created the album?  Doesn't seem to work that way?

Flickr and Facebook albums do no longer sync with the edits done in the library.

The synced albums caused too much trouble. Many users lost photos because they did not understand how the syncing worked. In Photos you can share to Facebook and Flickr, but the shared albums are not part of the Photos library.  When you  want to update the shared albums, you have to add the updated photos by uploading again and to delete the old versions directly on the webpage.

Would like to import photos from my camera, create either an event or album,

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear.  It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue.  Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.  This will change with the release of Photos 2 with El Capitan this fall.  That will allow the sorting by date or title, ascending or descending.

Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via Apple-Photos Feedback.

So if I understand what being said, while photos are automatically shared to your other iOS devices, any edits you do to the photos are not shared?

My Photo stream is streaming the original file the moment you take or import the photo. It is not updated when you edit the photo. To stream the edited version you have to save a copy of the photo.

Shared albums are sharing the photo in the state of edit it is at the moment you share it. If you add further edits you have to share it again.  Photos in shared albums are stripped of the custom titles and captions you add. And they are reduced in size to no more than 2048 pixels on the long edge (or 5000 for panoramic shots.)

Not digging this new Photo's app at all.  Workflow just doesn't fit.  Not intuitive.  Maybe it's not meant for anyone who likes to edit photos before sharing?

The Shared albums will transfer the edits, but they do not update the shared photo, if you edit it later. Add all edits you want to apply before you share the photo.

You may want to send a feature request to Apple using the feedback form:   Apple - Photos - Feedback

It seems you can have all your photos on all your iOS devices and Macs, but none of the edits you do on one device are transferred to the others. I understand that once you share photos with others, that your edits wouldn't automatically transfer, but between your own devices it seems that your edits should transfer.  Other iCloud docs work this way, why not photos?

If I really have this right, then I will submit this to apple.  Just seems a very strange design choice.

If you used iCloud Photo Library,  all your edits would be in sync across all your devices.  That is what iCloud Photo Library is for.

my Photo Stream is for transferring the photos you take on one device to the other devices.  Share albums are streams to send photos to your friends and family.  So use iCloud Photo Library, if you want edits to sync.
