Well, the advice I posted was 2 years ago, so insert the following before the first step:

  • Verify that you have version 12.6 of iTunes. It requires Windows 7 or later, or Mac OS 10.9.5 or later. If you don't you will have to upgrade your computer first.
  • Once you have done that when you connect the phone to a USB port you should see this in iTunes:

If it doesn't appear try different USB ports.

Install the latest version of iTunes on your Windows 7 or later computer. Connect the phone using the cable, click on its icon in iTunes.

Then click the Backup Now button in iTunes. If you want to include health app data and stored passwords you must check Encrypt Backup first. Don’t forget the backup password, because you will not be able to restore the backup without it.

Thanks for the help, I succeeded in getting to the backup function. However, I do have some comments that might help others like me who haven't your experience.

1. To get to "Preferences" I had to select "Edit" first. this is on the second "bar" down from top.

2. After selecting the tick box, select "OK" - some of us have to be told to do this.

3. I couldn't see the "Icon" to select until I realized it was on the third"bar" down from top.

For me it is a pity I-Tunes is so named, it suggests (to me) that it only deals with music not other functions. Anyway, many thanks.

That’s not how you back up an iOS device. Connect the phone using the cable, click on its icon in iTunes. Then click the Backup Now button in iTunes. If you want to include health app data and stored passwords you must check Encrypt Backup first. Don’t forget the backup password, because you will not be able to restor the backup without it.

  • Install the latest version of iTunes from http://apple.com/itunes
  • BEFORE connecting the phone open iTunes and go to Preferences, Devices tab. Check the box to NOT sync automatically when a device is connected. This will prevent the computer from overwriting your phone's storage.
  • Connect the phone using the Lightning cable to a USB port directly on the computer (not a hub). It should appear in iTunes as an icon in the top bar.
  • Do not sync the phone.
  • Click on the icon, then click Back up now.
