Message issues

Recently I've been having problem with my messages. Now, when I open my messages app, the screen will freeze, and after about 10 seconds it prompts me to start a new message, but I can't type in any contacts or send any texts. When I press cancel on that it brings me to the normal texting app, but none of my messages show up. When this happens I can't receive any messages either (I've tested this by sending myself texts from other people's phones). Also, when I try to click on the iMessage settings, it freezes my screen until I leave the settings app. I can't make phone calls or FaceTime either. Does anyone know what the problem can be before I give up and take it to the Apple Store?

Hi AustinT44,

It sounds as though you're experiencing multiple odd behaviors that are keeping you from using the Messages, FaceTime, and Phone apps normally. In such a situation software troubleshooting can often help get things back into a properly functional state with little trouble.

The first steps would be to force close ALL open apps and force your iPhone to restart.

Force an app to close in iOS

Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

If you're still unable to use the affected apps, the next step would be to reinstall iOS on your device by placing it in Recovery Mode, then choosing Update in iTunes.

  1. Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
  2. Put your device in recovery mode.
  3. When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
