clip duration

I have dragged images from iPhoto into my timeline but cannot change the duration of the clip. I click the i icon, and do make a change to the number of seconds the clip is to last in the movie. But the time always reverts to a previous value. For as many years as I have used iMovie, this has been a problem. I've looked for answers in Help and on these boards, but nothing speaks to the issue.
