iphone 6 messaging app closes when I try to insert/edit text

When I go in to text message someone and I need to edit the text, I put my finger up in the text and hold it down. Until recently that would insert the cursor there and let me choose to copy or paste etc. Lately what happens is that the app closes. I also have tried to type message in the facebook messenger and when I tried to edit them, it closed that app as well. It doesn't seem to happen in email or in the notes app.

Double tap the home button, and then swipe the open apps upward to close them. Then hold the sleep/wake and home button until the Apple logo appears. Hopefully this will fix the issue.

iPhone 6, I have the latest update I know of

Please tell us what that is. Go to Settings > General > About; it's listed next to "Version."

It is 8.4

i can edit when posting here. Also Twitter posts and searches in safari. So strange.

Since you've already tried force restarting your phone per questionasker3's post, the next step would be to try a restore. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414.

I was afraid of that.

I will read up on it tomorrow. Those things are intimidating because I don't want to totally lose my info so I have to read and be sure I do it all right.
