Macbook 12 inch very hot

I have a brand new 12 " Macbook that I've been using for the past 2 hours to surf the web on Safari. The bottom is very hot and a message just popped up that I shutting down safari might cool the unit down. Is it normal for a Macbook to heat up so much I was under the impression that these units were meant to remain cool.
