Kernel Panic - Why is it happening?

I have suddenly experienced a kernel panic on my Macbook Air mid 2012 today

Running OS X 10.8.5

Can anyone figure why? Suddenly the screen froze and the computer restarted with the message "Your computer restarted because of a problem".

I was browsing the internet on Firefox at the time it happened and had MS Word and Preview open.

The report is here, I could only get this report after logging in as the Administrator Account. My external hard drive used for Time Machine is now not working and can't be repaired by Disk Utility :-(

Thanks in advance for any insights as to why this happened.

If the panic has happened only once, and there's no repetition in at least a few thousand hours of use, I suggest you ignore it. Regardless of that, you should remove the Symantec product, because it's worthless. It didn't cause the panic, however.

Remove the Norton/Symantec product by following these instructions. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different.

Back up all data before making any changes. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" product again.

Thanks Linc.

What is the panic caused by?

I plugged in my external Seagate hard drive, and then an error came up saying Disk Utility cannot fix the disk. Although I can access the files, I have to reformat the disk in order to save stuff onto it.

A few minutes later, another kernel panic occurred.

Do you think it's due to the hard drive, or is the hard drive affected because of the 1st kernel panic?
