If I delete files to free up space, can I later restore them using Time Machine?

I'm trying to free up space on my hard drive to download the latest OS update. I've used time machine with an external hard drive to back up my current files. If I temporarily delete them to free up space, can I later restore them using Time Machine?

That's a bad idea. It's probable that it would work, provided you restore them before the roll off of the backup, but you'd be better off to move the files to another external drive as well, just to be sure.

Tempting fate by relying on a backup that way is not wise.
