cannot change songs while in lock screen

i just bought iPod touch 4th gen so i can leave it in the car and listen to music every time it locks the screen i cannot change the song unless i unlock the screen
i can see the name of the song but cannot change songs while in lock screen 😟

iPod touch, iOS 6.1.6, iPod touch 4th generation

When you are on the lock screen double click the home button then a little control panel should pop up with the name of the song a play button and forward and back arrow As well as the volume control. Is that what you wanted?
