where are my pictures gone?

I imported the pictures from my phones camera using the Sony bridge software as usual. Which imports directly into the iPhoto library and then deleted the photos from the phone as per usual.

The trouble is that my OS recently updated and has replaced iPhoto with the new Photos software which i had not opened yet.

Upon opening the new Photos software and waiting for it to search the computer, there was no trace of my latest import. It seems that they were imported to nowhere.

Is there a chance they might still be somewhere hidden? or as it seems are they gone for good?

Have you tried to open iPhoto? The update to Yosemite did not replace iPhoto. It is still in your Applications folder. Open "Applications" and drag iPhoto back to the Dock and run it. If the iPhoto icon is crossed out, try to update to iPhoto 9.6.1 as described here in

Barney-15E's user tip: It explains how to update to iPhoto 9.6.1 by reinstalling your purchase. Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3

At the end of the day you need to ask Sony for details on how their software works - as a general rule no third party software can directly import into Photos (or iPhoto for that matter)

As a suggestion stop using Sony Bridge and use Photos or iPhoto - there is no need for an additional unsupported software package in your workflow
