voiceover tool not working

So,

The voiceover tool in FCPX is not working. Both my external and internal mike work fine and the voiceover box shows it's getting a signal input. Also, the green sound clip is created on the timeline. However, no sound waves or actual sound is in the clip. I have trashed preferences and restarted the iMac, to no avail. Anyone had this happen?
