iPod starts if connected with PC or socket

Hello,

just have found my old iPod nano in the cupboard which I want to use for listening music on the beach.

It starts if I connect it with the PC or socket but otherwise not. Pushing the power button several times does not help either.

What is the reason? Is the battery damaged? Still have loaded it for 20 minutes but does not work.
