"messages" locked

Hi, I have just switched to an Iphone 5s. It's all working OK, but somehow the 'messages' has locked; the screen is not touch-responsive on the blue bits. I have tried turning it off and on again, and that's my IT expertise exhausted! Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.
