Q: thumbnails missing after restore form Time Machine

I have restored my photos library from a Time Machine backup, after rebuilding the library all thumbnails are missing (white o black rectangle).

If I import new pictures the new thumbnails are present, but only for the new pictures!

In /var/log/system.log I have found several of this error

    Hello lorenzofromrm,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

In order to try and troubleshoot this issue where the photo thumbnails in Photos are appearing blank after restoring, please repair your Photos Library by following the steps below.

Use the Photos library repair tool - Apple Support

    Have a good one.

Did repairing bring the thumbnails back,  lorenzofromrm?

If not, you can force the creation of thumbnails by selecting several  photos at once and then rotating them back and forth by entering the key combination ⌘R followed by ⌥⌘R .  Rotating generates new thumbnails and can be done for several photos at once without entering the edit mode.

    HI,

no the repair tool didn't work.

Rotate the image works... But I have more the 10000 images in my library... is not a good workaround.

You can rotate them in groups of 500 to a 1000 so it is not that big a task

How can I select 1000 images with "one click"?

ok anyway I will try and maybe si not a big task... But add rebuild thumbnails options should be an idea! (in iPhoto this is possible I think).

But I have more the 10000 images in my library... is not a good workaround.

It is the only method we found that will create the thumbnails again.   iPhoto and Aperture had first aid tools to recreate thumbnails, but in Photos you have to edit a photo to create new thumbnails.

And rotating is the only edit that just sets a rotation tag and does not actually reprocess the photo, so it is lossless, and it can be done with large groups of photos at once.

Your other option would be to go back to the original Aperture library or iPhoto Library were the thumbnails are still there, or to recreate them in aperture or iPhoto. But then you would lose your recent work that you did in Photos.

To select a range of photos select the first photo, then hold down the Shift key and select the last photo.

Or open an album with photos and enter the key combination ⌘A  for "select all".

    Yes the point is that!

Apple is famous for the slogan "it works"... Meaning that the application is simple and efficient... rotate all images for restore the thumbnails is not so smart!...

... rotate all images for restore the thumbnails is not so smart!...

The main problem is that the thumbnails are frequently going AWOL at all  - and that should not happen in the first place.  We would not need tools to recreate thumbnails, if they would not get corrupted or vanish so frequently.  I hope Apple will fix this bug,  and include the thumbnail recreation into the repair tool.
