my imac will not restart

after installing snow leopard OS X, my imac will not restart to install the new downloaded updates. It will shut down and start up fine, but the new updates are not loaded. Everytime I hit the restart button to install updates, it acts like it is going to shutdown, but then freezes on the starry screen and just stays there. I have to force it to shutdown. But then the updates aren't loaded. Any suggestions?

This sounds like a corrupt install, exactly which iMac do you have?

Imac 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 1 GB memory. I have put the the Snow Leeopard disc in and ran disk utility but it still won't restart. I can shut it down, but the new updates aren't loaded. This was the first Imac with the Intel chip, I think.
