Spontaneous restart

So my MBP (Mid-2010) running OS 10.9.5 with 8GB of RAM and a 1TB solid state drive has been unexpectedly crashing, and - for the most part - rebooting all on its own.

Anyone know how to read a crash report? Looks like it's a graphics (NVIDIA) issue, considering that it says it's a GPU panic, but that's about all I understand.

I'm taking it to the Genius Bar soon, but I'd like to be armed with a little more info before some 22-year old tries to give me "Well, have you upgraded to Yosemite?"

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.

Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.

You may be quoted a price of about $350 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.

Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.

If you don't want to pay for the repair, you may (or may not) be able to work around the problem by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.

Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

Yep, so this seems to be the case. Genius Bar confirmed the MLB/graphics issue with the VST diagnostic. And because I'm no longer covered under Applecare OR the recall program, I'm looking at a $310 Depot repair, which as you said, is still no guarantee that it'll fix the issue.

It seems that this is still an issue with other MBP models manufactured from 2011-2013 and that there's an active repair extension program to cover those defective models: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/. I tried to speak with a senior specialist on the phone, but no dice - at this stage, they're writing off the problem due to the age of the computer.

I can't help but feel totally screwed by Apple here. Essentially, I was sold a product with a latent defect that wouldn't show up until I upgraded my OS -- which you're forced to do, if you want other upgraded software to work correctly. I was never informed about the defect, even though I made my purchase through Apple, and purchased Applecare on top of that. When a recall/repair program was started - again I wasn't informed even though I was a registered owner of the affected model. Now that the program has ended, they have another one for the same defect in later models. They never fixed the issue, and didn't contact the owners of affected products. So now my options are: spend $310 on an otherwise functioning laptop which is already being considered obsolete by the manufacturer - or buy a new one, which i've just discovered has ZERO user-upgradability. Overpriced storage and hard-soldered RAM? No thanks.

It seems that that Apple's only real innovation these days is how they manage to alienate their longtime customers while still increasing their profit margin.
