IP camera setup on airport express (2nd gen)

Hello all,

I'm trying to connect an IP Camera to my network and I'm running into two problems described below. I have two airport express devices. The main one wired to the modem is a 2nd generation AE (main), and the second one, used to extend the network, is a 1st gen AE (extender). The main one is set to create a wireless network, and the other to extend the signal.

The first problem is that I cannot connect anything to the LAN ethernet port of the unit that is creating the network. They're both working fine, but when I plug my IP Camera to the LAN ethernet port of the main AE, I can't read the camera's IP address. It seems that the port LAN port is disabled. I've heard this port is disabled when the router is setup to join a wireless network, but is not the case here. The IP camera is also working fine because I have already tried to plug it on a different router ethernet port and I can see its IP on the network.

The second problem is how to open a port to access it from the internet (port forwarding). I had it working on a different router so I have a DDNS account, fixed IP, etc. I just can't make it work on the airport express.

Thanks for the help.

Let's tackle the first problem first.

The Ethernet port on the 1st Gen Express is always enabled when it is configured to "extend a wireless network" and it is also enabled if the Express is configured to "join a wireless network". However, if your 1st Gen Express is not really a 1st Gen model and is instead an older "b/g" version of the Express, the Ethernet port on the older Express will not be active, even if the Express is set up to "join a wireless network".

So, the first check that you will need to perform is open AirPort Utility on your MacBook Pro, click on the 1st Gen Express, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears. Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window to verify that the Network Mode is indeed "Extend a wireless network or "Join a wireless network.

If that is the case, power down both Express devices, wait a minute, then start the 2nd Gen first and let it run a few minutes. Then, start up the 1st Gen and let it run a minute.

As a test, try connect your MacBook Pro to the Ethernet port on the 1s Gen Express using an Ethernet cable that you have verified to be working.. Turn off the wireless on the Mac temporarily, and check to see if you can get a good Internet connection that way. If you can, then you know that the Ethernet port is working correctly.

Post back on your progress.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Ok, so I've checked the setup on both AEs.

The main one (connected to the modem) is set up to "create a wireless network". The older (used to extend the network) is set up to "Extend a wireless network".

I've also confirmed their models by double clicking on them with the option key pressed. The first one is a "AirPort Express 802.11n (2nd Generation) " and the older one is a "AirPort Express 802.11n (1st Generation)".

I have also disabled the wifi on my laptop and connected to both of them via an ethernet cable. In both cases I was able to connect to the internet.

So I know the ethernet ports on both AEs are working, but for some reason I am not able to find the IP camera when I connect it to the AE.

Any thoughts?

OK, now you know that the Ethernet ports are working so can get to your second question.

The next thing to confirm will be whether you need to set up Port Mapping...as Apple calls it...or Port Forwarding.....as the rest of the world calls it.....on your modem or on the 2nd Gen AirPort Express.

Open AirPort Utility again and click on the 2nd Gen Express, then click Edit and then click the Network tab at the top of the next window. Check the setting for Router Mode. Is it DHCP and NAT or is is Off (Bridge Mode)?

We don't know anything about your camera......the make or model.....or what specific requirements.....like the port numbers......the camera needs to operate correctly. If you could provide a link to the camera installation guide or setup manual, that would be very helpful.
