GarageBand is not a musical score editor. You will not get good results for the sheet music in GarageBand.

To write notes, create a software instrument track and open the track editor. Set it to "Score". Then you can add notes by clicking into the score.

When you print the track, you can produce a sheet as PDF:

Have you read the Help page I linked to? http://help.apple.com/garageband/mac/10.0/#gbnd516f4e45

It explains how to edit in the Score Editor.

The following pages are giving more detail: http://help.apple.com/garageband/mac/10.0/#gbndaa6f1109

You can add notes directly using the pointer. You choose the note value for added notes from the Insert pop-up menu in the Score Editor inspector.

Choose a note value from the Insert pop-up menu in the local Score Editor inspector, then Command-click at the point where you want to add a note.

You can also add pedal markings from the Insert pop-up menu. Select the Ped. symbol, then Command-click in the score at the point where you want to add a pedal down symbol, then drag the pedal up symbol to the point where you want to release the pedal.

I find it much easier to edit the midi notes in the Piano Roll editor. It is easy to add notes by command-clicking and to adjust the length of notes by dragging the edges of the note.

This is really unbelievable. léoni was kind enough to answer that question with a screenshot and a link (instead of giving the appropriate RTFM response) and you think that was not very helpful. If you actually looked at the link, you would have seen that this is basically the online manual where you find further information if you spend some time with it. (BTW, the word "thank you" seems to be extremely under-used nowadays)

Definition: A manual is kind of a book where you find information how use an application.

Requirement: You need the ability to read, some commitment and basic study skills.

Hoe DOES one punch in some notes in GarageBand 10?

Here is the proper way to do it. You go to the manual, read about it, put some work into it to educate yourself (instead of expecting other people to do the work for you), and then just do it. If then, you still have some problems or cannot do it, then you ask on the forum what exactly doesn't work when you apply the procedure that you have learned from the manual.

Here are two resource that are very helpful (they even have the word "help" in it, which should be already a giveaway)

Inline Manual

Click in the Help Menu directly in GarageBand, there you find "GarageBand Help" that opens the QuickHelp page.

Greetings all,

My comment ("This was not very helpful") was rather cogent, accurate though perhaps a little too curt, My apologies to Leonie' who appears to be intent on being especially helpful for all.

To clarify, "this" was meant to be directed to the Apple Manual (yes, I read it), not our colleague's efforts to pinpoint the location that was most germane to my request. It pointed out (rather nicely) how to edit in the Score mode, but my question was addressing how does one "write" (or "step record" or insert brand new notes into the score (without having to first record some notes into a region and then manipulate them into acceptance.

I did find the answer - press the "Command" key in the Score editor and your cursor turns into a pencil.

Click on a track and it creates an empty region to fill, then proceed to the score window and punch in your notes (selecting duration first).

Thank you all for being helpful, and so willing to help out.

Kind regards,

dncollins
