when transferring iMovie library to EHD is it best to do entire library as a whole, therefore only usable in iMovie, or individual clips?

Move the whole library. You can always access the raw media in the library by showing package contents, opening the relevant Event folder and looking in the "Original Media" folder. To make sure that everything needed by projects is in the library and not referenced it is advisable first to consolidate projects and events - see: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0.8/#/mov882dee351
