Sending a song as a gift --- apple id or any email?

So, I want to send a song as a gift to a friend. I have the email address he uses now, but his 'apple id' email is not the one he uses now. So can I send it to him via his normal email? I just don't know how it works when you receive something. Thanks in advance for any help anyone could provide
