My primary email address for my apple id is not the same as the primary one for my ipod. I tried to change it and use the apple id on my ipod for my laptop, but it says that it is unavailable. How can I use both ids for both devices?

What are you doing when you get the unavailable message, and what is the full text of the message ? To log out of an account on a computer's iTunes use the Account > Sign Out menu option (Store > Sign Out on older iTunes), that will then change to an Account (Store) > Sign In option so that you can sign in with a different account - is that what you are doing ?
Any content downloaded by an account will remain tied to that account
