IPP printing to a raw queue using a non-PPD driver: possible?

In my home network I have an old Powerbook G3 Lombard which runs Linux and serves me as both router and printer server. To it I have connected a Canon MP770, a printer/scanner only sold in Japan: its printer part should be compatible with the PiXUS IP 4100 though, as pointed out at http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1380393
On the Linux machine I run a CUPS server. The MP770 is configured as a Local Raw Printer so that I can easily use it from my other Windows computer using the Canon proprietary drivers (I followed this page to configure it http://www.owlfish.com/thoughts/winipp-cups-2003-07-20.html ).
Is it possible to do the same from Mac OS X? I tried to configure it as an "Internet Printing Protocol using HTTP" device: it partially works (prints out the test page but in a wrong format) selecting a more or less random driver from the list of available Canon bubblejet ones, but I cannot select a driver for the MP770 (or IP 4100) as the ones I can select from the Printer Browser window under Printer Model are only the PPD ones. Is there a way around this?
An option would have been installing the Linux drivers on my print server, but the ones available at ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/ are only for i386, so no chance of installing those on my Powerbook G3.
Anybody as any idea? Thanks a lot.

The problem on OS X is that there are two print driver APIs - one for CUPS drivers and the old Carbon one. Manufacturers use the Carbon one because it is the one they find "at Apple." Carbon drivers don't use the CUPS backends - they have the comm protocol specified within the driver. If it's a USB printer, the driver only works for USB.

Only a CUPS driver can use the CUPS network printing protocols in OS X. Your best hope for finding a CUPS driver for that printer is from www.printfab.net

Thanks. I installed the Printfab drivers and everything seems to work fine now. Of course I wish there was an official driver for my printer and paying extra money to use it is a bit of a let down. Anyway it's the only thing that wasn't working in my jump from Windows to Mac OS X, everything else is working great, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.
