Soring files on Icloud from external HD

hi,

I use an external HD to store my photos (50,000) and am looking into start using icloud for an extra back-up. My question is can I back-up to icloud from my external HD or do I have to import all my photos into the Photos program on my Imac and then back-up? I went to an external HD to get away from having them on my computer to save space. So I'm hoping I can just upload from my external HD.

iMac, iOS 8.4

You can store your Photos Library on an external drive and make this library the System Photo Library to upload to iCloud. But iCloud Photo Library is not a cloud backup. It will sync with your current library and mirror all changes. You cannot revert to previous versions from the iCloud library.
