iPhoto photos 'gone' and macbook turning off

I have a Mac book Pro. OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b)

Purchased early 2011. 4GB Memory.

Recently it has randomly been switching itself off, sometimes I will turn it on and 30 seconds later it's off again, other times it works great for hours and then decides to turn off. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing when it goes off. Help!?

Also...

I was importing photo's one by one from my Facebook page into my iPhoto library, The laptop switched off and when I turned it back on my entire photo library was empty, including albums and photo's from years ago.

I have tried holding down the CONTROL + COMMAND Keys while opening iPhoto and trying to repair that way but have had no luck as a message comes up saying..

"iPhoto is unable to open this library.

The library is not compatible with iPhoto"

And all I can do is click 'Quit'

I'm not sure when my last backup was.

I've been overseas for the past year and a half, i'm not sure if this has anything to do with it?

Why has this happened? and Is there any way I can get my photos back?
