Apple maps slow

In Apple Maps in Yosemite, the satellite tiles seem to take 15-20 seconds per tile to load. Way too slow for use. I checked my connection speed and it is around 10mbps. Google maps in Safari loads briskly... I want to like Apple Maps but this sluggishness is too distracting. Any ideas how to get it to run like an actual useful app?
