i initiated an OS update on my friends iPad 2 and now the screen goes back and forth from black to white with a black Apple logo. I don't know how to troubleshoot this. Should I plug it directly into her iMac instead of wireless?

Try a reboot press & hold power button & menu
Button hold both down until you see Apple Logo .
If this doesn't help .
Turn ipad off
Connect lead to USB on your PC
Press & hold power button down Dont let go
Connect lead to ipad keep power button pressed down
Until PC sees ipad then wait for restore .
You may need to do this a few times.
