nano shows up in itunes but will not sync

I have an older nano. I haven't had any problems with sync until this latest version of I-Tunes (ver 12). Now my nano will show up as a device in I-Tunes but when I click on it to show what is on it - everything is listed but grayed out. When I try to sync it I get a error message saying Cannot sync nano because it is not connected. I-Tunes shows it and if I use the File drop down menu - it is there under devices. I can eject it but just not sync it. I have I-Tunes ver 10 on my laptop and did not let it update. I connected my nano to that (same cable) and it synced perfectly. Is there something in ver. 12 that is messed up? Or - is there something else I should be doing now to sync my nano? Thanks for any info you can give me.
