Cannot get 2560 x 1440 from Acer G277HU Display

I have recently purchased an Acer G277HU 27-inch 2560 x 1440 display for my late 2012 i7 MacMini.

I am using it with a DVI cable and an Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter, but I only have the following three resolutions available to me:

1920 x 1080

1600 x 900

1280 x 720

I do not have anything attached to the HDMI port.

I know that MacMini can support 2560 x 1440 as it's the resolution of the Apple Thunderbolt Display.

Can anyone help, as I've searched other topics similar to this, but it seems to be a minefield of 3rd party cables and adaptors that don't seem to give any guaranteed results whatsoever.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help me to solve this.

For resolutions greater than 1920x1200 you need a dual-link adopter

Per this

The monitor also has a displayport connector. You can get a mini displayport to displayport cable and use that. the mini displayport end plugs into the Mini's Thunderbolt port. The cable costs about $15 from NewEgg compared to $99 for the dual-link adopter

I has same problem with my my new second monitor to suit my mid-2011 27" iMac (an Asus PB278QR) - wouldn't display 2560x1440 same as Mac. I could only get max res of 1920x1080. I knew the VGA lead/adapter would not work, but was led to believe an Apple HDMI adapter from the Thunderbolt Mini DisplayPort would work - it didn't!

The response above needs to be a "recommended solution" published by Apple, as the current articles are insufficient. It took me 2 trips to Apple stores, a useless HDMI-adapter purchase, reading of articles, Googling forums and 2 Apple telephone supports to get back to this simple answer:

1. Best solution: purchase a $20 display cable - Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable (no adapters).

2. Only other (second-best) solution: purchase a Au$149.00 Apple "Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter".

As Apple do not supply these, I opted to purchase online from Macfixit Australia a "Mini DisplayPort / Thunderbolt to DisplayPort Cable With Audio Support - 1.8m" and it works! [SKU D-MINDP-DP-ZF-MA013]. No I have 2560 x 1440 on both displays... Yahoo!
