Why are my cropped pictures transferring to iPhoto uncropped/reverted back to original photo?

I just got the iPhone 6 version 8.3. and I am trying to upload cropped pictures from my phone to my iPhoto (version 9.2.3). They look like they upload edited, but when the upload finishes they show up as the original uncropped photo in the new iPhoto album. I have always cropped and uploaded to iPhoto without a problem using this method (perviously had an iPhone 5s). So what has changed and what step am I missing?? Once again apple messes with a good thing.
