Underperforming GPU

I have been having graphics problems for a while now so I decided to do a little benchmarking and research about my GPU. I am not an expert in this field so I will appreciate advice. My mid-2012 Macbook Pro has an Intel HD Graphics 4000 card. The GFX bench I read gave the following framerate results regarding Driver Overhead (what does that mean):

Onscreen -13.7% of expected framerate

Offscreen: -75.8% of expected framerate

Most of my problems involving graphics have indeed involved choppiness (whether moving around windows, watching video or light gaming). Is there anything to be done on the software end to fix the framerate issue?
