iTunes stuck on step 3 of 7

Please can someone help? iTunes gets stuck on <Syncing "Name's iPhone" (Step 3 of 7)> on both an iPhone 4s and iPod Touch. Both were synching quite normally two days ago. I have made no changes to my Windows PC nor to the iPhone or iPod.

Steps taken so far:

  1. I have ensured that the Windows firewall is not blocking iTunes
  2. I have also run Diagnostics from the Help Menu and all tests have passed, i.e. green buttons
  3. I have uninstalled iTunes, downloaded the latest version and reinstalled iTunes after rebooting my PC
  4. I have tried a brand new cable on the iPhone (the iPod is almost new)
  5. I have re-set the iPhone by holding down the two buttons


Basic information

  • iTunes Version 12.2.1.16.
  • iPod touch (5th generation) running firmware version 8.4
  • iPhone 4S running firmware version 8.4
  • Microsoft Windows 7 x64 Business Edition Service Pack 1 (Build 7601

Sync tests completed successfully.

iPhone 4S, iOS 8.4, null
