Cannot mount old HDD to new MBP

I recently had to replace my mid 2009 MBP today with the rMBP. My old MBP crashed and will not boot up so there was no way to get my files off the old machine. I bought an external drive case and put the old HDD in there. The old HDD does not show up on the desktop so I went into the disk utility and verified and repaired my old HDD. I cannot mount the old HDD to my new rMPB now. I've never done anything like this before and I would really like to get my old music and photos back. Am I out of luck?

Your old HDD may be too damaged to work anymore, which is why your it failed in your old MBP as well. It's good that Disk Utility found it, but that does not mean it's really working properly. There are hard drive recovery specialists who offer services, but no guarantees.

This is why backups are so important. Hard drives are simply not reliable enough by themselves to ensure recoverability.
