How do I improve playback audio quality?

I imported a video that sounds perfect in VLC but the sound is very, very poor in FCPX - I really don't know how to describe it besides "echo-y" and sounding like the Voice of the Legion. Would anyone be willing to help? I'm a newbie so not quite sure what stats I should provide, so do tell me 🙂 Thanks a bunch!
