Trying to merge one iPhoto library with another library -- on the same mac

I am trying to merge my husbands iPhoto library (which I have on a flash drive) with the library we have on our family iMac. I can only see his pictures when I click on the flash drive, but when I try to import his photos, I can't. And I also can't see the photos residing on the iMac I'm trying to merge to unless the flash drive with his pictures are closed and gone. Super frustrated. Would also love help organizing these photos when I've successfully merged the 2 libraries.....

iPhoto does not have the capability of merging multiple iPhoto libraries. Aperture, however, can do that. Or you can look for a third-party utility that can merge iPhoto libraries.

If you don't already own Aperture, then you cannot get it. Aperture, like iPhoto, was replaced by Photos. You will need to look for third-party software. Try at MacUpdate. I can recommend iPhoto Library Manager 4.2.1 for use with Yosemite and iPhoto libraries.
