The procedure, assuming the MBA has a version of Mac OS X Lion or newer: restart holding the Command and R keys. When the machine has restarted, from the Utilities drop down choose Terminal. When Terminal has opened, type EXACTLY the following:

resetpassword

and press Enter.

When the Resetpassword window has opened, pick the internal storage (Macintosh HD) and the user, then type a new password twice.

Click Save and accept the next dialog window that opens up.

Go to the lower right of the Reset Password window and reset the home directory permissions.

Then go to the apple left side of the menu bar and Restart.
