Can I update an iMac with a broken screen?

I have a 27inch iMac late 2012 with a broken screen. I have an external monitor plugged in.

The external monitor doesn't get recognised or display anything until the log-in screen loads.

Will I be able to get through the software update process?

For example, when I switch to windows, after restart the screen that I choose startup disc is not displayed. I have to tab select windows [or bootcamp?] rather than use the gui.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

A new screen could be $300 plus so I understand your thinking but when a screen gets broken and other things begin to fail, all you can do is experiment with it and hope it keeps going. No-one here can anticipate the situation you now have; there are no formal answers where breakages are concerned.
