Partition map problem with my hard-drive

I have a 1 TB G-Drive back up drive.....it has developed a problem...... I have it physically connected, and the drive is on........the computer recognizes this connection.....when I went to troubleshoot the drive, I found this error message on disk utility as I clicked "Repair Disk".........as follows, " Partition map repair failed while adjusting structures to fit current whole disk size." What does this mean and how do I repair it, if possible? I don't want to loose the information on the drive..

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

To fix it you are probably going to have to erase the drive and reformat it. This will erase all data though.
