Will my drive burn DL's? I don't believe so but want to make sure, most threads I've read say the superdrive does burn DL. I don't believe that's the case here. Am I right?

Most DVDs are single layer with a 4.7 GB capacity; dual layer DVDs (8.5 GB) are far more expensive and have a "DL" on the label:

Sorry, I stand corrected. After having been in the CD & DVD disk molding business I was thinking too narrowly of what it was that we were making (and finding that single layer systems were dying out in favor of the larger capacity of the multilayer DVDs). Apparently only in our involvement.
So would you say this specific drive does not support the burning of DL's or does it?

You need to look at the specifications for that particular drive. If it is the drive Apple sells for iMacs, it supports:
Supported Media Types
CD-R, DVD-RW, CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-ROM
In the original post I posted my specifications: which say nothing about dual layer support. When I research the device via apple store and go through the question and answers people say it does. What I am reading and what I see under "about this mac - system report - Disc Burning" aren't matching up.

I agree with rkaufman - call Apple because: I was under the impression that all Superdrives support dual layer burning; however, that is usually shown in the specs and, in yours, it is not. So that is confusing. I know Apple sold two different versions of the external Superdrive at some point - maybe there was one with and one without DL capabilities?
well ****, I call support this morning and tell them my issue. As I am explaining it I pull up the disc drive stats again......
