How do I manage email memory

iPhone 5, IOS 8.4, 16GB. Email is using 6+Gb of my memory and I am out of space for other apps. Have deleted all "sent" email and emptied the trash but that had no effect on available memory. How can I limit the amount of memory that email is allowed to use?
