iPhone Backup using iTunes

I backed up an iPhone yesterday (onto a Quad Core Mac Pro running Snow Leopard) and cannot seem to find the downloaded files? How might I find them? They do not seem to appear in the default location. Also, is it possible to just get the one file needed rather than downloading just about everything?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 1,1 4 Core 2.66 GHz, 10GB RAM, FCS2

iTunes: About iOS backups - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204136 - including a list of what is backed up.

What kind of file are you wishing to restore? Not everything gets backed up since it is assumed the computer was the source for it in the first place. I don't know if it is possible to restore a single file, though there are third party "extractors" which are supposed to be able to do that.

I don't know about open source, not owning any iOS device and having no need for such software. It tends not to be free. I have these links and I am sure there are others if you do a web search:

iBackup Viewer - http://www.imactools.com/iphonebackupviewer/ - "iBackup Viewer browses iPhone backups, export backuped contacts to Address Book and get user data of Apps."

Realize too that audio files are special because they fall into different categories. Unfortunately you are not being sufficiently specific about this file. Many audio files on a phone originate from a computer and as such are not something that is backed up. Is this a ringtone, a music file from the iTunes Store, a music file from somewhere else, a voice memo?
