What kind of file are you wishing to restore? Not everything gets backed up since it is assumed the computer was the source for it in the first place. I don't know if it is possible to restore a single file, though there are third party "extractors" which are supposed to be able to do that.

Jul 31, 2015 9:11 AM in response to Limnosby KGD,I was not aware of third party extractions but makes sense - what might be available that is open source? What we are after is one small audio file.

Jul 31, 2015 9:44 AM in response to KGDby Limnos,I don't know about open source, not owning any iOS device and having no need for such software. It tends not to be free. I have these links and I am sure there are others if you do a web search:
iBackup Viewer - http://www.imactools.com/iphonebackupviewer/ - "iBackup Viewer browses iPhone backups, export backuped contacts to Address Book and get user data of Apps."

Realize too that audio files are special because they fall into different categories. Unfortunately you are not being sufficiently specific about this file. Many audio files on a phone originate from a computer and as such are not something that is backed up. Is this a ringtone, a music file from the iTunes Store, a music file from somewhere else, a voice memo?
