Quick time not recording

I am using OS C Yosemite (v 10.10.5) and QuickTime 10.4 and I have been recording trainings using both my iPad (Air 2) and my screen recordings. My screen recording work very well, but my movie recordings using my iPad are giving my troubles. Most days it works just fine (for a few hours), but other days I cannot get it to record audio OR visuals.

When I click "new movie recording" my iPad shows up and after I click "record" I can see my screen change as I move between apps, but when I end the video I either lose the first ten seconds and the last 3 minutes (of my 5 minute recording) and there is no audio. Sometimes when this happens the timer will not run during the first few second of recording, but then skip to 12 seconds on the timer after.

Other times when I click the "record button" I will have no audio feedback (mic is plugged in, not loose, and working) and zero MB saved and the time will not be running. When I end that video I get a message saying "Recording did not work. Please try again".

If you need any more specifics please let me know.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), using an iPad Air 2 to record from.

OK

YIKES!! Beta software, by definition, is "not ready for prime-time" - asking folks in the "real world" to observe and report any anomalies they experience with it. It is possible - I suppose - that your issue went UN-experienced by you during Beta (while still lurking there) and made its way into the Released Update(s)

As I have no experience with your issue specifically, nor with OSX 10.10.5 - I cannot offer any ideas.

Still, the intermittent nature of ANY issue - and the variety of issues - is bothersome... a software bug CAN be reproduced by repeatable ActionFlow - every time. I hope you can find some change - however insignificant it may seem to you - in your environment.

Your Action PLAN should be:

  • Find an ActionFLOW that reproduces ANY anomaly - every time
  • document that FLOW in DETAIL - screenshots help a LOT
  • post results here - cross fingers that someone on the bleeding edge of new OSX and new QT sees this thread

Shortly after I read your last message it started working ok. I checked the environment and then left for the weekend. I returned to the office today and again it is not working. I tried using different microphones (all the microphones work just fine when screen recording), but I am not only at a loss of sound, but the videos have cut to 31 seconds as well even though I record for at least 3 minutes.

I have attached a picture of the error message as well as a few screenshots (cropped to fit download size). As you can see I have audio capability, but when recording everything is gray even though you can see the audio bar moving and watch as the screen changes between apps. User uploaded file

You're not alone! I noticed this 2 weeks ago, when my brand new MBPro i7 13" would not capture video from a mobile device plugged in via Camtasia. Same goes for Reflector 2, and Quicktime. Of the 3 software, my least favorite....Quicktime....would capture my iPad briefly, but it will only do it sporadically (typically 9-10 seconds max). This bug is killing me at work, for I'm rolling out training videos on how to use an iPad app to 300 people and I've had to resort to filming my actual hand over the iPad (lame). This issue isn't machine specific. My Macbook Air also is having the same problem, and it previously worked like a champ with the same versions of Camtasia / Reflector 2 for over a year. I think the problem lies with iOS 8.4

KATE ( and also Bryan)

Gremlins is what we used to blame these kinds of anomalies on... knowing deep down inside that there was OS-App-Hardware incompatibilities introduced by adding/upgrading/updating something!

At this point, I suggest trying to get actual Apple folks involved - they are not really HERE much, except to moderate the forum.

I would document in a detailed way :

  • an ActionFlow that can be reproduced
  • all Hardware, OS X, software & versions, cabling - everything

Then -- click here > Apple Support | Contact - this process is tricky because you will be "led" to pick things that will tend to "avoid" contact with real people. Be clever and vague with your choices and answers, and you will likely get to the options page where you can schedule a Phone Call.

Your next goal will be to tell your Story quickly (write it down like a 'script'?) and as soon as you can, elevate the issue up the chain of Senior Specialists - I have never had a problem solved at Level 1 - not because hey are not smart, just they don't have the tools. If this is truly a B U G (take care using that term - "misbehavior" is my favorite), only Senior Specialists in Apple Support can elevate this to the software group.

I say again -- Your ultimate goal is to ELEVATE the Issue to Senior AppleFolk - your "ace in the hole" is that you were successful BEFORE and now NOT.

There are several VERY clever QuickTime professional experts that frequent the QT forum, and they are noticeably absent from this conversation. I have seen this "no sound" issue in passing several times as well, and have not noticed any resolved - a search does not show any either (I searched FIRST before replying the first time)

Thanks ChitlinsCC,

I'll take your recommendation and try to elevate it. For perspective, here's a low-quality video showing the issue. (MBPro13",i7,512GB,16GMRam, 10.10.4 and issue happens on all of my mobile devices, such as iPad, iPad mini, iPad mini retina, iPhone 6, etc... Also I've seen the same issue on my MacBook Air, which did this type of video screen capture from mobile just find, a few months ago).

No problemo, amigo.

This thread, your video should make fine 'evidence' when you get hold of AppleFolks

Key phrases are "working fine" then "stopped working"

You will likely be required to identify "What was the event that immediately preceded the onset of this behavior"?

If your issue is repeatable with a historically successful WorkFlow that now fails, that is clear and convincing evidence that there is something funky in Denmark.

best luck and keep us updated

So I called Apple yesterday (I made it to the top! It took an hour or so, but I got there!). It turns out my misbehavior is from the beta version after all. I had not saved my files via Time Machine, but they wanted to wipe my computer and install 10.10.4 Yosemite instead. If you have backed up your computer recently see if they will do this for you.
I tried to record my webinar on my old Macbook Pro (2011) that has 10.10.4 and it seems to be working perfectly, but I noticed that they had made a new update for Beta today and BAM! They fixed the problem! Thanks for the advice on moving up through the tiers. It was a bit teidious, but everyone was very helpful and the next day my problems were solved! Thanks Apple!

I am sorry to go over what I just typed, but my Quicktime worked only for a few minutes. When I exited out and then back in it started acting up again and exhibiting the same misbehaviors as before. The same misbehaviors appeared on my personal computer as well (10.10.4, 2011 Macbook Pro). I will find an alternative to recording my webinars for now, but I hope for other users that this problem is fixed for good soon! It was a phenomenal program to record webinars on and I am sure it will be even better after the next update! I definitely learned my lesson with Beta versions.

I did notice that I had Microsoft Word and my Logitech headphones in when I re-opened Quick time again. Maybe that has something to do with it? Even after I took out the headphones and closed Microsoft Word it is still not working. I hope I did not damage the program somehow.

"B E T A" - of ANYTHING Apple - is a no-no in the open forums. let that be the last mention thereof without EXTREME vagueness.

That said, you have just reported proof that it is not related to the unmentionable by reporting that " The same misbehaviors appeared on my personal computer as well (10.10.4, 2011 Macbook Pro). " - what thid actually may prove is that the B U G appeared in 10.10.4 or the lastest version of Quicktime or BOTH in Concert.

You certainly got a Trouble Ticket # if you "made it to the top"

CALL BACK and give the first responder that # and REopen the issue - be sure and include the success and failures on your "other" Mac that is now failing as well.

YOU have the best chance of getting results - not only for yourself but for anyone else affected

Keep at it KATE !!
