How to connect Canon projector to 2012 Macbook pro

Hi,

I am having trouble connecting my 2012 Mac book Pro to canon lv-7297M. I used a Apple Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter to play a video and it didn't work.

I checked with someone in the Apple store and he told I need a VGI adapter and aux cable to play both audio and video which sounded ridiculous to me

could you please recommend what adapter/cable that I need to use to play both video and audio using the canon projector..Appreciate your time and help.
