Not too long ago there was the ability to dictate a message via iMessage, but I just tried to use it and instead of dictation, it just recorded the audio and wants to send it as a sound byte. Why is it doing this and how do I get my dictation option back?

The icon for dictating is on the keyboard, next to the space key. The icon for recording a voice file is next to the iMessage box.

I had this problem earlier today as well. But now it is back to normal. The only difference is I wasn't connected to wifi (I was driving) and I had my data turned off. Right now, I am connected to wifi (albeit very SLOW and SPOTTY wifi) but still have my data turned off. I do not know why or how the two would even be related...
Dictation transcription is done via the Siri severs, not on the phone, and requires a data connection (WiFi or cellular) as well as enabling Siri.
