can I connect to my car via bluetooth?

I would like to connect my iPod Touch, 5th generation to my new VW via bluetooth. Can this be done? The car manual says that it will connect via bluetooth, but only if the bluetooth is a certain standard. The lightning cord that is available for the VW evidently only charges the iPod.
