I have an early '09 20-inch iMac and I'd like to get a new 13" MacBook Pro and occasionally use the old iMac as a monitor but... the iMac has FireWire but not Thunderbolt and the iBook the opposite. How can I make this work?

Sorry, but your iMac cannot be used in Target Display Mode. You would need the 27" model in 2009.
Although slower than Target Display, you may be able to use screen sharing via software. Please see:
This operation with Imac is not possible. It would be something magnificent, but no thought in 2009 in this option.
