I have pre-ordered a movie at iTunes Store on my iPad. The system told me to check downloads but I don't know where to find downloads on my iPad?

If it's now been released and you've paid for it (pre-orders are only paid-for on release) then check to see if it shows in the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app on your iPad.
(The message about check for downloads probably refers to computer's iTunes, there is an Account (Store on older iTunes) > Check For Available Downloads menu option on them.)
