iTunes requests new blank cd

We insert a CD, the system whirs and thinks, it spits out the CD. But then, sometimes, we get the "Initializing..." prompt, and after several hopeful, breathless minutes, it spits out the CD. Every great once in awhile, we get the prompt, and the CD begins to burn. Spouse has been tossing the CD that get rejected, but I've tried using one that was spit out, and it burned beautifully. I've seen this same question asked multiple times over the last couple of years, with responses that don't help with the problem. Advice to troubleshoot and so on, but no real answers. The last similar question was submitted in 2014, and since it's now 2015, I might assume no progress has been made in this forum toward a resolution? Should I call a tech?
