Q: domain file won't open in iWeb on new/used MBP

Funny thing -- I asked this question years ago when I first got my MacBook Pro. I've since had to get a new (used, but new to me) MBP to replace the one I got back in 2007-9, somewhere in there. Anyway, the one I have now is identical to my old one because I loved it so much and Apple doesn't have a comparable MBP for sale anymore.

My question is about iWeb. I have version 3.0.4 on both computers and went through the steps suggested in copying/saving the domain file from the old computer and putting it in the same place on the new computer. From the looks on the desktop, the correct domain file is there, but when I double click it, it opens iWeb and wants me to start a brand new page. I'm starting to get frustrated because I've tried this several times, several ways, always with the same result.

The thing I'm wondering is: on the help page is tells you that the domain file is in Application Support/iweb and I don't have that folder on the old computer. I do, however, have it on the new computer but had to search for it, since it wasn't easily accessible like it should have been. On the old computer, I found the domain in Users/Sites/Domain but that file says it hasn't been updated since 2007.

I've been publishing to FTP and saving all my files to a folder on my desktop (but even in there, there's no "domain" file)

I'm running out of options -- anyone have any suggestions?? I'd really love to be able to work on my files on the new computer because I'm not sure how much longer my old computer is going to hold up

Thanks so much!

OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Since you asked the last time, the question has been asked and answered a million times.

Just look down the page with topics.

On your old computer the file you want should be in (user)/Library/Application Support/iWeb. The Library folder may be hidden. Apple have hidden the user’s Library folder in Lion and above to casual viewers, in an attempt to stop new Mac users messing their machines up. To access it, in the Finder go to the ‘Go’ menu and hold down the Option (Alt) key; the Library folder will appear as a choice. In Mavericks you can make it permanently visible - open your Home Folder the from the Finder's View menu, choose show View Options and check Show User Library.

To open your domain file in Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.

do shell script"/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"

    delay 1

    tell application "iWeb" to activate

You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.

Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.

WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

NOTE: In Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible in Lion or Mt. Lion enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

For Mavericks, and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

Thanks! I was able to find the Library before, and had tried dragging/dropping countless times, countless ways but hadn't gotten to the CORRECT Library until I tried your method because within that folder I found about 4 domains. I deleted them all and tried dragging the one I've saved from my old computer but now when I double click it, it tries to open iWeb and then crashes. I need to try getting to the Library on the old computer the same way I did on this new computer and re-save the file because the file I'm working with now says it was modified in 2007 ..... (and I definitely just updated/published/saved the websites this morning on the old computer) Thanks so much for your help! I'll give it a whirl once I get home this afternoon and have access to both computers again!

Thanks for your help but your advice leads me to another problem I've been trying to solve (and getting frustrated with myself for not figuring it out, and I'm pretty savvy!) This new computer doesn't have the MacintoshHD icon/shortcut on the desktop and I'd really like it to be there. Trouble is, I can't find it to GET it there. Is that something new with Yosemite? I mean, even in all my finder windows, MacintoshHD is nowhere to be seen in the list on the left side.... I've got:

    All My Files

    iCloud Drive

    AirDrop

    Desktop

    Lindsay

    Applications

    Documents

I'll also try to delve into your suggestion about iWeb after I try the other suggestion first. Yours seems a bit more time consuming thank you!!

Finder Preferences>General and check 'Hard Disks' (under 'Show these items on the desktop').

Thanks for the feedback on that.  I tried it also and it was damaged.  Will have to check that out.

The correct link is this: iWeb Switch Domain

You're welcome & thanks for sending another link. That one worked just fine! (Other than when I tried opening the domain file I had, it caused iWeb to shut down again). I'm HOPING it's just because it's an outdated version's file and once I get the up-to-date file saved, I'll be able to open it no problem! *fingers crossed*

I wanted to say thank you again for everyone's suggestions! Once I found the correct Library and Domain file - it WORKED with no crashing!!! YAY! I have to say, Apple Support ROCKS :-)
